Dating Duterte Supporter: I’m sorry, I was wrong; I’m with you vs tyranny, stupidity

DDS = Dating Duterte Supporter

“After months of silence and inactivity, I now choose to speak up. I already expect the many i-told-you-sos from the people I’ve clashed with in the past, and I welcome all,” ani Ruther Flores.

“People like me who, armed with knowledge, skills, and research capabilities, created the massive propaganda and social media campaign. In retrospect, my view was narrow, lacking, and subjective. I should have known better,” ani Flores.

“I am sorry. I should have been more prudent in my beliefs, critical in my thoughts, and harsh in my judgments,” dagdag pa ni Flores.

“I am no longer a supporter of this president,” ani Flores.

‘I’m with you’

“I am with you against the tyranny, stupidity, and absurdity of this president. I expect to be an unwelcome addition, but I will remain steadfast in my beliefs with or without a circle to embrace me,” ani Flores.

“The fight for a better Philippines continues. And this time, I pick myself up from the grave wrong I have committed and the gigantic problem I helped to create,” ani Flores.

There will be no Duterte if not for me

After months of silence and inactivity, I now choose to speak up. I already expect the many i-told-you-sos from the people I’ve clashed with in the past, and I welcome all. I just hope you realize how hard this is for me: to swallow pride and concede defeat.

I am no longer a supporter of this president. I remain hopeful and supportive of the government — as every citizen is bound to do. I will continue to welcome the positive developments, no matter how scarce. But I will no longer support the monster that people like me created.

I only have three things to say: I am sorry, I was wrong, and I am with you.

I AM SORRY.

Contrary to popular belief, I submit that people like me created Duterte — not the masses. People like me who should have known better and should have not let emotions get the best of us are the ones responsible; people like me who continued to rationalize the bullshit of the man from Davao City.

People like me who, armed with knowledge, skills, and research capabilities, created the massive propaganda and social media campaign. In retrospect, my view was narrow, lacking, and subjective. I should have known better.

I still firmly believe that, aside from MDS, no other candidate was politically and/or morally fit to be president in the 2016 elections. My concession does not mean my withdrawal of disgust with other candidates.

I am sorry. I should have been more prudent in my beliefs, critical in my thoughts, and harsh in my judgments.

I WAS WRONG.

Having known and seen the public face of the demon who now heads all of us, I could not help myself but see him as the answer, the quick fix, the panacea to the social and political and economic ills that continue to bring this country and our people down.

I was hopeless. I was disgusted. I was angry. And in my anger, I was blinded. Blinded for two more years, in fact. I gave him the benefit of doubt. Now, no doubt is left.

I should have been calmer, more tempered in my views, and more capable in my research. I fed my prejudice with any credible evidence I could find. And I rationalized even when I should have called him out. I reserved my right to criticize, and now, I’m using it, hopefully not too late.

I AM WITH YOU.

You may not like me. You may still hate me. But I am with you against the tyranny, stupidity, and absurdity of this president. I expect to be an unwelcome addition, but I will remain steadfast in my beliefs with or without a circle to embrace me. After all, I already went with the crowd of 16M. Now, I can take the road less traveled by. And maybe this will make the meaningful difference.

I am with you, even if you can fight the good fight without me.

To this country we call the Philippines, I AM SORRY.

To the people I clashed in debates arguing for the president, I WAS WRONG.

And for the people who continue to resist, who continue to fight, who, like me, have had change of heart, I AM WITH YOU.

The fight for a better Philippines continues. And this time, I pick myself up from the grave wrong I have committed and the gigantic problem I helped to create.
